High Five Athlete: Kevin Yolken
Wednesday, July 21st, 2010Seattle to San Diego Update: words by Kevin Yolken
Thursday, May 6th, 2010Made it to San Francisco! 100.20 miles today (we hit 99.6 and had to ride in circles for another quarter mile) New personal record again though. 1055 miles and counting for the trip!  I swear I can see my legs getting bigger. Maybe that’s my imagination, but I sure as hell know they are getting stronger. We both have pretty awesome “biker” tans going though…the line from our gloves and the sleeve line from the jersey. Looking good. The redwoods were awesome, I would recommend everyone ride their bike on the Avenue of the Giants someday in their life. On a side note I happened to come into Arcata with good timing. An old friend of mine was coming to visit his sister that day for a marathon they ran this past Sunday. I had contacted Sara to meet for a bite to eat, and her brother showed up thirty minutes later with two surfboards and two wetsuits, so naturally I went surfing and froze my ass off in a 3/2 with no booties or hood. (trying to get my arms in shape for Mexico) The good news is the worst of our hills are behind us. We have had some brutal days, something like 6 or 7 thousand feet of elevation gain over a days riding. Chelsea is going to take a rest day here in San Francisco, but I’m pushing on past Santa Cruz tomorrow and she will come meet me via car. My roommate from Hawaii happens to be flying in tonight to San Francisco to pick up my car and drive it to San Diego, so he is taking Chela’s place tomorrow and riding with me, and in the morning the next day she will meet back with the car and hop back on the bike. I’m hoping we make it to San Diego May 10th…but it could be the 11th. Two forced rest days and some bad luck because of weather put us a little behind schedule, but were still charging. Looking forward to being back in Tahoe later this summer for some good weather and fun times. High Five,
Kevin
Update “Seattle to San Diego”
Saturday, May 1st, 2010Seattle to San Diego: Update
Thursday, April 29th, 2010April 27, 2010 (words via text from Kevin Yolken)
Today is a forced rest day, thunderstorms and heavy rain. Â We are ninety miles from the California border, last night the town we are in literally flooded. The streets were rivers, it rained hard on us yesterday and the wind was forty miles an hour head wind. We were going eight miles an hour downhill and if we stopped pedaling, we were blown backwards. The day before was ninety five mile day though (yeah guys!!!!!). Personal record for both of us, the worst of this storm is supposed to pass today so hopefully we can reach California tomorrow.
April 28, 2010 (words by Kevin Yolken via text)
We are 564 miles in, with 1100 to go, it is Day nine. Now, you can’t beat tonight! Normally when you gamble and win money they comp you a hotel room. Well, this casino had their hotel under construction so instead they offered us some grass to pitch our tent in so we didn’t ride our bikes a half mile to the campsite after drinking. Great night already
Keep charging guys, you guys are doing great things and the people of High Fives love it!
Seattle to San Diego: Update
Wednesday, April 21st, 2010Seattle to San Diego: Kevin Yolken and Chelsea Laswell
Sunday, March 28th, 2010Kevin Yolken, once wheelchair bound from a skiing accident is now ready to give back. With the help of Biking for a Better World, he is going to ride his bike from Seattle to San Diego with his good friend Chelsea Laswell.
Chelsea is a 23-year-old life enthusiast who for the past 4 years has been working hard on the NCAA skiing circuit as a full-scholarship athlete pursuing both her athletic dreams and collegiate education. In December 2009, she graduated with honors from the University of Utah with a degree in Urban Planning. About 5 years ago she got into cycling as a means of cross training for ski racing, and for years she has been wanting to ride across the country. Unfortunately, with skiing being her number 1 priority, all of her other dreams had to be pushed aside but now in April 2010, Kevin and Chelsea will embark upon their journey with the world at our tips.
