The High Fivers are what makes High Fives so special, a group of exceptional people who have made their life around winter action sports.
“Born, raised, and currently live in Truckee, CA, I burst out of the womb on to the bunny slopes of Squaw Valley, and then my passion for the sport quickly grew. I was a bump humper for the majority of my childhood and started skiing park at the age of 14. Currently, I coach the for the Squaw Valley Freestyle/Freeride team, along with being a ski bum/ski coach, I'm a hard working dedicated student, graduating from University of Nevada Reno with a Bachelors in Accounting, December 2010. High Fives has been a great experience for me, I competed and won the first 540 competition and have worked closely with Roy Tuscany ever since.”
I would like to encourage everyone to join High Fives Program and help the cause.
“My name is Ian Compton, I am 21 years old and have been skiing for about 7 years now. I went to middle school for hockey but discovered skiing at the school's mini-mountain. After 14 years of hockey, I quit on the spot. Skiing is the biggest part of my life, and will continue to be for as long as I live. Nothing gives me the same joy and sense of freedom that skiing gives me. I am from Vermont and grew up skiing Mount Snow. I dealt with all sorts of winters on the East Coast, lots including rain, so now I live in Salt Lake City Utah where the weather is glorious. I was lucky enough to meet Roy Tuscany during my trip to Squaw Valley this winter and couldn't be happier to be a part of High Fives.”
“My name is Mat Jackson, I am 23 year old freeskier living in Squaw Valley, California. I started skiing at a year and a half old, and it's been all I want to do ever since. Currently I am riding for Smith Optics, Volkl, Marker, and The North Face. Along with my ski career I am finishing up my senior year as an undergraduate business student at Sierra Nevada College. My plans for the winter are to compete on the Freeride World Tour, and ski as many powder days as possible.”
“After 15 years of competition I retired from ski racing not by physical ailment, but by choice. Others have not been so fortunate. I have known many athletes who have sustained injuries that ended their seasons, careers, and in a few cases, their lives. Riding for High Fives Non-Profit Foundation will give me the opportunity to raise money for athletes who have suffered from these life-altering injuries because I feel that every person should have the opportunity to pursue his or her goals. By undertaking this journey it is my way to support these athletes to get back to fulfilling their athletic dreams and life ambitions.”
Doug Stoup is the premier polar guide in the world. He has been to both poles more than anyone else on the planet. Doug is an expedition leader, logistics specialist, ski mountaineer, climber, environmentalist, educator, motivational speaker, father and humanitarian. There isn't a season goes buy were Doug is not pushing the limits of human endurance and raising money for youth and his education programs.
“In August of 2005 I broke my back and suffered a spinal cord injury while skiing in Chile, leaving me paralyzed from the waist down. The motivation to walk again with the hope of someday being back on skis pushed me to work harder than I ever have, and to keep a positive attitude throughout the experience. I set goals for myself and watched as I got stronger and stronger over the months and was able to check off accomplishments. It started with small things like moving my ankle or my toe, then standing and eventually taking a step, and now I have a 1500-mile bike ride in front of me. I have followed High Fives since the beginning and it’s great to see what they are doing for other athletes whose lives have been dramatically changed by a life-altering injury. It doesn’t have to be something that brings you down, and I hope through examples like myself and so many others that we can keep inspiring people to achieve their goals, no matter how far out of reach they may seem.”
The Silver Boombox Thief, aka Edgar Allen Flow, aka John Mack N Flow, aka the dj that turns house party’s into concerts was born in Albany, NY to the parents of Peter and Chantale Connelly. After graduating high school thanks to a loaded class schedule of jazz ensemble, band and orchestra for the drum set, he still had an interest in making funky music for funky folks but had no band to speak of. Naturally, this led to an interest in rocking a party with a set of turntables. Today, with a 15+ year history of cuttin’ and scratchin, the Silver Boombox Thief is known for a blend of old school hip hop with good new school rap, + some classic soul and a little bass heavy dubstep mixed in. He plays the music you loved but forgot about + some new beats so damn funky they would make Steven Hawking do the worm. To book The Silver Boombox Thief for a wedding, bar mitzvah, house party, birthday or break dance competition, contact his booking agent: Roy@HighFivesFoundation.com.
