On July 5, 2023, Zach was gravel cycling and linking two forest service roads, when he lost control on a high speed single track shortly after a corner. Zach collided with a stump, catapulting him over his handlebars and onto his head. The impact resulted in injuries that caused paralysis from the chest down. Specifically, he suffered a C6-C7 spinal fracture.
