In February 2012, while rushing to work in Costa Rica, Daniel was struck by a train while crossing railroad tracks that had recently become active after years of inactivity. The accident resulted in the amputation of both his legs above the knee, as well as multiple fractures and severe injuries to his pelvis, hip, and shoulder. After emergency surgery and two weeks in an induced coma, he spent nearly four months in the hospital before beginning his recovery journey.
