High Fives Foundation Secures Official Patent for the High Five

Truckee, CA — After years of consistent use, field testing, and undeniable cultural impact, High Fives Foundation has officially been granted the patent for the High Five.

U.S. Patent No. 5,555,555 (Filed: January 14, 2009) now recognizes the “Method for Executing an Official High Five” as proprietary to the organization.

“We’ve been doing this for a long time,” said Roy Tuscany. “At a certain point, it just made sense to make it official.”

What Changes

Starting today:

  • All High Fives should meet basic quality standards (eye contact preferred, timing encouraged)
  • Missed High Fives may be subject to immediate retry
  • Excessively soft High Fives will not be recognized

A certification process is currently in development for those looking to take things more seriously.

Built for Everyone

The patented method includes multiple approaches to ensure accessibility across all athletes, including adaptive variations. The goal remains the same: connection, recognition, and showing up for one another.

Looking Ahead

While enforcement will remain light (for now), High Fives Foundation encourages the public to stay sharp and keep standards high.
