Brandon Louie
Brandon was in Hawaii at Waikiki Beach taking a 1-hour surfing lesson with a friend. He had caught and stood up on every wave in the lesson. He had only surfed once 2 years earlier on Maui with no problems. He started feeling some back pain mid-lesson but it wasn’t too bad. But on the last wave, he stood up on his board, felt a pop in his lower back, and knew something was wrong. He managed to surf to shore, pull his board up on the beach, and then laid down as the pain got worse. A family friend found him on the beach and was going to give him some Advil for the pain when he realized he no longer could feel his legs. She called 911 and an ambulance came. The EMT suspected surfer’s myelopathy since he had seen it before.
