Brett suffered a burst fracture of his L3 vertebrae in a snowboarding accident at Northstar Resort in California. He went off a 40ft long jump that he had done multiple times and was attempting a trick that was not new to him. Something went wrong upon take off and his board clipped the back of the jump sending him into a half back flip from 30ft up causing him to land directly on his back.
