While on a foot patrol in Afghanistan, Michael was hit by an IED. The blast sent shrapnel into his lower back, thighs, and knee, while also severely damaging his left arm below the elbow, ultimately leading to its amputation. Additionally, the explosion damaged his eardrums, leaving him completely deaf on the left side and partially deaf on the right, along with sustaining a Traumatic Brain injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

“You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! - Rocky Balboa”
