BELT GOAL PROGRAM | JACOB SCHICK

High Five #HighFivesAthlete Jacob Schick for achieving his second Arcade Belt Goal of skiing with his family!

  1. GOAL 1 –Return to the mountain to ski for the first time since my injury, specifically at Squaw Valley. (COMPLETED on 3/24/2015)
  2. GOAL 2 –Participate in winter sports with my wife and son without assistance from adaptive devices. (COMPLETED on 3/24/2016)
  3. GOAL 3 – TBD
  4. GOAL 4 – TBD
  5. GOAL 5 – TBD

These goals are achieved as a part of the Arcade Goal Belt Program which was established as an initiative that guides athletes through the complex recovery process after a life-altering injury.

The belt program, which is similar to a karate belt system, rewards High Fives athletes with an Arcade belt containing a new gold star for each milestone achieved. This framework is designed to provide clarity, support, competition and inspiration for others as these athletes work to rebuild their lives.

Jacob Schick’s life-altering injury came on September 20, 2004 when the vehicle Schick was driving hit a triple-stacked tank mine. He sustained multiple injuries including: compound fractures in his left leg and left arm; multiple skin, and ligament injuries; bone loss and partial loss of his left hand and arm. Additionally, Schick endured an amputation below the knee of his right leg.

To date he has endured 26 operations and 23 blood transfusions. He was also diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).
