While touring in the backcountry with friends in Grenoble, France, an avalanche broke under Katie’s feet. This tragic act of nature resulted in Katie’s partner being killed instantly on impact, and Katie becoming paralyzed.

Katie hopes to return tot he sports and activities she has always loved without limitation, specifically, continuing to ski, climb, and hike.

Katie Combaluzier

“Receiving the empowerment grant means that I can afford to do the sport I love. I grew up skiing and it was my favorite thing in the world. After my skiing accident I immediately recognized I now had the chance to ski in a different way, so I set myself the goal of representing my country at the winter Paralympics. Adaptive skiing equipment is reeeeaally expensive, the grant from High Fives means that I can continue pursue my passion and achieve my athletic goals.“
