Derek suffered a traumatic dislocation of his right hip and resulting “crush” of his sciatic nerve from a high-energy impact and tumble while skiing. The mechanism of injury and extended time to reduction left the nerve in traction for approximately 3 1/2hrs causing profound paralysis in his lower limb.
