On August 30, 2017, Cory was paralyzed from the T4 vertebra down after being struck by a falling tree while cycling. As he rode down a canyon, sudden microburst winds snapped a tall pine tree, which fell on him without warning, causing severe internal bleeding that led to his paralysis. He spent the next 12 months in various hospitals recovering from his injuries.
