The 2026 Return to Dirt season officially got underway on May 10 as athletes Doug Teal and Matt Detweiler hit the trails near De Beque, Colorado for their first-ever Return to Dirt experience.
Joined by Matt’s wife and Doug’s brother, the group spent the day exploring the rugged beauty of Western Colorado while enjoying the camaraderie and adventure that make Return to Dirt so impactful. For both athletes, this was their first time participating in the program, making the trip an exciting milestone in their adaptive recreation journeys.
Doug, who hails from the Denver area, and Matt, traveling from Montana, were treated to a landscape unlike any other. The De Beque region is famous for its stunning desert terrain, dramatic cliffs, and the wild horse herds that roam the area. Visitors from around the country come to this part of Colorado hoping to catch a glimpse of these iconic animals, which have become a symbol of the region’s untamed spirit.
Over the course of the 48-mile adventure, the group navigated scenic backroads, shared stories, and experienced firsthand the freedom that comes from getting back outdoors. The trip provided an opportunity to build confidence, create new friendships, and enjoy a day surrounded by family and supporters.
As the first Return to Dirt outing of 2026, the day set the tone for another season of adventure, connection, and unforgettable experiences.
At High Fives Foundation, Return to Dirt is about more than miles traveled—it’s about creating opportunities for athletes to reconnect with the outdoors, explore new places, and continue pushing forward.
