On July 13, 2024, Alex crashed his KTM 450 while riding back to the truck after a 26-mile single-track ride. About a mile from the truck, he and his group got turned around and fenced out, forcing them to find their way back to the trail. While riding in second gear and scanning the area, his peg or back tire clipped a hidden rock in the tall grass, cuasing the bike to jolt and sending him over the handlebars onto his back. Immediately numb and unable to move, he waited for his riding partner to catch up, and they were able to find cell service to call for a medivac helicopter to transport him to the hospital.
