After returning from the National Amateur Motocross races in Tennessee and deciding to go professional, Alexander was competing at his hometown track, Glen Helen Raceway, when an accident occurred on the second-to-last lap. His foot off the peg and caught on a jump, sending him over the handlebars. Albee struck his head on the bars during the fall and immediately realized he was unable to move.
