Andrew “Bernie” Bernstein

Andrew is an elite-level track racer who competed in events like the Olympic-qualifying trial and USA Cycling Elite National Championships. Then in 2019, while on a training ride, a driver in a cargo van hit him from behind and left the scene.
His goals include: Walking with a cane by November 2020, building strength in his hamstring, getting more proficient on the bike, and connecting with others who have suffered major traumas.”
“The hit-and-run threw me into a ditch. I was only semi-conscious but I understood that to get help, I had to get out of that ditch, and I wriggled my way to the top, and was spotted and saved. Now, I have to wriggle out of that ditch every day.“
High Fives has provided:
$2,530 Adaptive Equipment (ebike/cycling AFO, skiing equipment) Healing Network (PT)
Cycle 1 2022 – $5,000 towards Adaptive Equipment

“This grant will allow me to continue training at the CU Sports Medicine and Performance Center, where I have been working since November to regain strength in my partially paralyzed left leg. Since starting there, I have been able to strengthen the muscles in my leg that are currently working. This work is helping me to get back on my bike.“
