Cahin was injured while training with the U.S. Army for his third deployment to Afghanistan as part of an infantry unit. During convoy operations returning to base from a break-contact training lane, the Humvee he was riding in collide with a stopped vehicle, and he took the full impact on the right side of his body. The crash caused severe injuries to his head and shoulder and ultimately led to an above-knee amputation of his right leg.
