While cliff jumping at a familiar waterfall, Kainalu misjudged the water depth due to changing conditions and struck the back of his head on a rock. Initially believing it to be a concussion, he later discovered severe whiplash and, on an MRI, that his brain had shifted into the spinal column. Following brain surgery, the injury resulted in loss of neurological function to the right leg, ultimately necessitation amputation.

“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”
