In June 2008, Lloyd sustained a catastrophic spinal cord injury (SCI) in a diving accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. After being submerged underwater for several minutes, he was rescued and resuscitated by a friend and his father before being rushed to the hospital. Following surgery and a month in the ICU, he spent six months in rehab regaining partial independence.
