Over Fourth of July weekend in 2023, Nick was at friend’s boat dock on Lake Travis for a party. As the evening wound down, he and a friend went to the top deck to watch the sunset and fireworks. While playfully horsing around, Nick accidentally stepped backward off teh edge and fell into a boat docked below, landing on a built-in table. The impact caused a dislocation of his spine at T9-T10 with a burst fracture, and resulting epidural bleeding compressed his spinal cord, leading to paralysis at the T7 level.
