Shawn sustained a complete spinal cord injury at the C5-C6 level. He was injured while snowboarding at Mountain High in Wrightwood when he hit a jump at high speed, lost control, and overshot the landing. The miscalculated jump caused him to land directly on his neck, with his chin tucked to his chest as he attempted to roll back to his feet in the air.
