Shay was skiing at Loveland Ski Area in Colorado just days before Christmas when she collided with a tree, hitting it back-first. The impact resulted in a burst fracture of her T5 vertebra, a humeral head fracture, and a partially collapsed lung. She lost consciousness, and upon waking moments later, she was unable to feel her legs.
