in 2015, Tom was enjoyng the ocean in Maui, body surfing when he dove into a wave. The powerful force of the water slammed him into a sandbar, and he immediately knew something was wrong–he couldn’t move. He had broken his neck, crushing his C5 vertebra and fracturing his C4. Face-down in the water, he struggled to hold his breath and stay conscious until his dad pulled him out.
