Chef, Athlete, Mentor | Justin Hirshfield

At High Fives Foundation camps, the goal is always the same…bring athletes together, build confidence on snow, and create a sense of community that extends far beyond the mountain. During a recent adaptive ski camp, Justin Hirshfield played a special role in making that happen, both on the slopes and in the kitchen.

Born in Denver, Colorado, Justin discovered his passion for cooking at a young age and eventually built a career as a chef. But his connection to High Fives Foundation grew through another passion…adaptive skiing and monoskiing.

Justin remembers how important it was when he first started learning to monoski. Seeing another athlete confidently navigating the mountain showed him what was possible.

“When I was learning to monoski, having another fellow monoskier that was good at it and showing me that you can get good at it was really inspiring for me.”

That inspiration stuck with him. Now, Justin makes it a point to pass that encouragement forward to other athletes.

Whether offering a quick pointer on technique or simply skiing behind someone and watching them apply what they’ve learned, Justin finds joy in being part of another athlete’s progress.

“It’s really satisfying and rewarding to have a part in somebody else’s success.”

At camp, Justin brought two important roles together. As both an athlete and the camp chef, he helped create the environment that makes High Fives Foundation camps so meaningful. During the day, he shared time on the mountain with fellow adaptive athletes. In the evenings, he helped bring everyone together over meals.

For Justin, that combination made the experience even more special.

“Being part of the instruction at camp, as both an athlete and the chef this time, was really rewarding.”

Moments like these highlight what makes High Fives Foundation camps unique. It’s not just about skiing, it’s about community, mentorship, and creating a space where athletes feel supported as they continue their journeys.

From the first day at camp, Justin felt that welcoming spirit.

“The immediate welcoming feeling of being part of the High Fives family—the Ohana—it’s a real thing. You’re part of something bigger than yourself.”

For athletes like Justin, the opportunity to give back is just as meaningful as the chance to participate. Sharing knowledge, offering encouragement, and helping create a welcoming environment are all part of the experience.

And sometimes, that experience ends the best way possible, surrounded by friends, sharing stories from the day.
