Surfing isn’t just a sport to #HighFivesAthlete DJ Lombardo; it’s a way of life.
Surfing has been a lifelong passion for DJ, providing fitness, fun, and freedom since he first picked up a board at the age of 7. Starting with a short board, he spent his early years frequenting iconic surf spots like Dana Point, Lowers/Uppers Trestles, and Huntington Beach. For DJ, surfing was more than just a hobby—it was a way to stay active and enjoy the rhythm of the waves.
Life took a different turn after an injury, but it didn’t keep DJ away from the water for long. Adaptive surfing became his path back to the ocean. Inspired by Mario Horton, he tried wave skiing. By 2019, DJ had his own surfboard, and his journey progressed as he upgraded to his third board—a custom model crafted by Jeff Brown that’s shorter and thinner than his previous ones. These advancements transformed his surfing experience, reigniting his connection to the waves.
In 2021, DJ took his skills to the competitive stage, making his debut at the U.S. Open in Oceanside. Since then, he has participated in numerous local competitions and is planning to compete internationally in Australia in March 2025. His journey with High Fives began in 2016, when he connected with the organization through a visit at Craig Hospital from Roy. This relationship has fueled his passion and determination.
But for DJ, surfing isn’t just about competition. It’s about community, inspiration, and making waves of change. His mission is to get more people into the water, teach them about adaptive surfing, and shape boards that make the sport accessible to everyone. Through his dedication, he’s helping others discover the transformative power of the ocean and the strength within themselves. Surfing isn’t just a sport to DJ—it’s a way of life, and he’s riding every wave with purpose and passion
