For the second year in the events two year history, High Fives Foundation has pledged funds and riders to help grow the sport of adaptive mountain biking.

The Dunbar Race series is part of the BC Cup race series. This three race series sees high-level mountain bikers competing in Fernie, Panorama, and Kicking Horse. Riders collect points at each stop in their quest for an overall points lead at the end of the season.

Last year, for the first time, the Dunbar series included adaptive racing. This was special to adaptive mountain bikers as this wasn’t your average race. The courses were steep, rough, and challenging, and being integrated into a very high level of able-bodied mountain bike racing added a level of legitimacy and coolness.

Last year the adaptive category had fewer riders as it was a bit of a test to see if it was possible, this year, with a great showing from last year’s competitors, the field was open to more competitors, and the competition grew tighter. Fifteen riders with a range of disabilities showed up for the first stop in Fernie, and it was clear that the adaptive riders were here to stay.

Over a week and three races, the adaptive racers swapped fastest times, and the sport grew as the riders showed what was possible. Not only did they showed themselves what was possible they showed everyone else who was there to watch or compete in the races.

The progression of adaptive mountain biking has not only allowed fallen riders the ability to gain back their passion, but also opened up opportunities for those who might never have gotten the chance before.

Seeing and being part of the progression of an adaptive sport has been freeing. The fact we weren’t doing this five years ago is unreal. The biking community has been supportive since the start which has given many of us action sport enthusiasts a place to feel freedom again. Developing a new sport has a lot of unknowns and uncertainties but I am excited to see what’s to come as the limits continue to be pushed. The future is bright for this sport and those who want to get back into the mountains!
