National Non-Profit High Fives Foundation will host the 3rd Annual Charity Golf Tournament at Vail Golf Club on Tuesday, August 29th. The event, sponsored by GoPro, Phunkshun Wear and Craig Hospital expects to see 36 teams of four rallying together to raise funds the High Fives Foundation, an organization that supports the dreams of mountain action sports athletes by raising injury prevention awareness while providing resources and inspiration to those who suffer life altering injuries

“As someone who has spent my life playing and working in the mountains, the High Fives Foundation is an organization that is near and dear to me,” says Beth Pappas, member of the High Fives Foundation Board of Industry and Tournament Director. “We plan to make this the biggest and best golf tournament to date. All funds go to injured mountain athletes, and I am honored to continue spreading the Foundation’s mission across the Vail Valley and beyond.”

The High Fives Foundation has awarded 20 Colorado athletes grant funding since inception, including 17-year old Gypsum resident, Kailyn Forsberg. In April 2015, on her second warm up run in the USASA Slopestyle Nationals at Copper Mountain in Colorado, Forsberg hit a jump with too much speed in the terrain park causing her to over-rotate her backflip and overshoot the landing. The impact to her neck and back instantly resulted in loss of feeling in her lower extremities.

“Our need is to get the best possible care and rehabilitation for Kailyn,“ said Mitchell Forsberg, Kailyn’s father. “Teaming up with with High Fives is one critical way to help accomplish this goal.”

Following the 9:00am registration, the day’s events will kick off with a Helicopter Golf Ball Drop and the Flop Wall contest sponsored by EPS-Doublet, where contestants will take a swing at “flopping” a golf ball over a 10-foot wall from a challengingly close distance. After the contest, announcements and rules, tournament participants will load in their carts at 11:00am and compete for great prizing from CMH, Head and Kind Design.

All tournament participants will have the chance to win great prizes in traditional on-course contests like the men’s and women’s long drive and closest to the pin.

The tournament does not only favor those gifted at golf, as there are fun contests throughout the day like the Copper Mountain Baseball Long Drive, where contestants will take a swing with a baseball bat to see how far they strike it, the Howard Head Closest to the Raft, where contestants will take aim at a raft floating in a pond and the Golf Ball Helicopter Drop 50/50 Contest.

“Hosting a Colorado Golf Tournament in the heart of ski country, Vail speaks to the community that we serve,” says Roy Tuscany, Executive Director of High Fives Foundation. “We have seen a recent increase in the High Fives Athlete community within the state of Colorado, so these tournaments have a direct impact from dollars raised to dollars served via Empowerment Grants.”

After the golf tournament, dinner, drinks, a silent auction that includes a $15,000 match and awards will be hosted at the Vail Golf Club, with dancing to music from Johnny Schleper.
