The High Fives Foundation’s B.A.S.I.C.S (Being. Aware. Safe. In. Critical. Situations) Program is designed to educate athletes of all ages on the importance of smart decision-making in the mountains. Throughout the month of October, the High Fives Foundation will be releasing the seventh installment of B.A.S.I.C.S. – A 22-minute documentary-style video to promote safety and awareness through world-class fundamentals coaching and education.

The B.A.S.I.C.S. 7 – Snow Safety & Awareness video is intended to educate outdoor enthusiasts on equipment and safety protocols, while driving awareness of the inherent dangers involved in mountain sports. The program highlights five key areas to recognize when enjoying the mountain in order to come home safe.

  1. Snow is Dynamic. The mountain conditions can change from day to day, hour to hour, run to run. Knowing the complexities of this dynamic element is critical to being safe in the mountains.
  2. Knowledge is Power. Learn how to identify different snow conditions and how they impact your safety in the mountains.
  3. Inbounds vs. Backcountry. Learn about unique and distinctive dangers within each environment.
  4. Consequences are Real. Making poor choices can lead to life-altering injury or worse. Progression and awareness are key to mitigating risk.
  5. Ride for Tomorrow. At the end of the day, it’s all about coming home safely. Be patient and educate yourself about snow safety so you can enjoy a lifetime in the mountains.

The B.A.S.I.C.S. 7 – Snow Safety & Awareness video will be presented in schools and ski clubs across the country to prepare young minds for the winter to come.

“It’s easy to understand why kids love ski films,” said Dr. Robert J. Leri, Superintendent Chief Learning Officer of the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. “They are inspired to go out and practice what they see in the movies that premiere at Squaw Valley and in the area. I endorse the B.A.S.I.C.S. program because of its similar approach to education. It uses the same storytelling techniques from ski films, but with the overarching theme of safety cognizance.”

Since the 2011 inception, the B.A.S.I.C.S. initiatives have seen nearly 250,000 total views, including 237 school presentations and 178,000 online views, leading to less injury in the outdoor community.

“The creation of B.A.S.I.C.S. has been essential in the growth of the High Fives Foundation,” said JT Holmes, B.A.S.I.C.S. Program Director. “We are working hard to educate winter sports enthusiasts by encouraging them to use good judgment in order to catch them before they crash or have an accident.”
