SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Decemer 4, 2015) – The 16th Annual Powder Awards, the longest running skiing awards show in the world, kicked off the winter season tonight celebrating the skiing community in honoring the top skiers, cinematographers, and photographers to an enthusiastic crowd at The Depot in downtown Salt Lake City.

The evening started by honoring the ten winners of the Powder Poll, with Sage Cattabriga-Alosa earning top honors for the first time. With an expanded list of honorees, five additional women were recognized this year. Angel Collinson took first place on the women’s side after Ingrid Backstrom’s ten-year reign as number one female, as voted on by fans.”What a night,” said POWDER Executive Editor John Clary Davies. “Skiing has never been stronger. It’s an honor for POWDER to bring together this community and have a building so full of talented humans. It’s inspiring to see how the best work from cinematographers and athletes inspires one another.”
Cattabriga-Alosa also won Best Male Performance, the fourth time he’s taken the prestigious standing. “This is an amazing honor,” he said. “The people out there skiing and everyone in this room, it’s so inspiring. We don’t care how much it snows, skiing can be fun no matter what-rain, shine, snow, or sun, we love skiing—let’s do more of it.”

Not to be outdone, Collinson won her second consecutive Best Female Performance award for her part in Teton Gravity Research’s Paradise Waits, and was also the first female to win Best Line with a special shout out, “This one goes out to the women. We’re doing it ladies!”
Showcasing the breadth of skiing, Cam Riley won the award for Full Throttle for his role in For Lack of Better, the emotional documentary about the masochistic world of urban skiing. The film also took home the night’s top honor, Movie of the Year. Athlete and director of the film, Clayton Vila, was emotional after the victory.
“I think we’re starting to get the respect we’ve hoped for a long time,” said Vila. “We’ve been pushing the sport for years, and we’re finally getting recognized for what we do and I couldn’t be happier about it. Within the skiing industry, this is the most respected award we can win.”
