“When we tug at a single thing in nature, we find it attached to the rest of the world”- John Muir

Protect Our Winters (POW) is an environmental awareness campaign started by pro snowboarder Jeremy Jones. Their mission is to “engage and mobilize the winter sports community to lead the fight against climate change.  Our focus is on educational initiatives, advocacy and the support of community-based projects.” Since 2007, Protect Our Winters has re-invested over $750,000 in initiatives that engage and mobilize the snow sports community.

Recently POW reached out locally in the Tahoe community by going to the local schools to talk about Climate Change. One of High Fives Interns, Chance Bordner, had the opportunity to get involved with POW and shared his experience with the High Fives Team.

“Everyone in my class got really interested because they wanted to keep as much snow around for as long as possible. We then split into groups and started thinking about how we could help stop climate change. We decided that we wanted to integrate solar panels at our school to cut down on using so much energy. To raise money we started a donation website so we could afford a solar panel.”

Chances’ story proves that the collective power of the winter sports community can work together and the end result can be revolutionary.

“I enjoyed helping with POW a lot. I felt like I started to help the community as well as formed good habits to help stop climate change like taking shorter showers and using less energy.”- Chance Bordner

Together we can Protect Our Winters.
