Annual Colorado High Fives x Return to Dirt Camp

Date: July 24-28, 2024
Location: Glenwood Springs, Colorado
Athletes: 10 Adaptive Athletes

Amid the rugged beauty of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, eight adaptive athletes gathered from July 24-28, 2024, for the Annual High Fives Return to Dirt Camp. This year’s camp was a celebration of empowerment, resilience, and the thrill of adventure, as the athletes took on 75 miles of open road in specially modified, hand-controlled vehicles.

The Colorado High Fives Dirt Camp isn’t just about driving—it’s about embracing the freedom of the open road and pushing personal boundaries in the great outdoors. From the first rev of the engine to the last sunset of the camp, every moment was filled with the spirit of camaraderie and the sheer joy of being in motion.

The camp featured a dynamic lineup of athletes, each bringing their unique energy and passion to the adventure. Alex Uppenkamp, Spencer Arnold, Ashley Bunting, Derrick Duncan, Kirk Williams, Tanner Ifrid, Dean Ahrens, Doug Rottman, Nate White and David Moya all came together to share in this incredible experience. The camp was a blend of intense off-road action and the kind of relaxation only found in the mountains of Colorado.

As the miles flew by, the athletes faced challenges head-on, navigating the terrain with skill and determination. The modified vehicles, with their dirty hand controls, became extensions of the athletes themselves, allowing them to conquer trails that once seemed impossible. The sight of smiling faces and happy dogs riding shotgun was a testament to the pure joy and freedom that this camp brings to everyone involved.

The days were filled with more than just driving. Backflips and breathtaking sunsets added to the camp’s unforgettable atmosphere, creating memories that would last long after the dust settled. The camaraderie among the athletes was palpable, as they supported each other through every twist and turn, both on and off the road.

“The Return to Dirt Camp is always a highlight of the year. It’s not just about the drive—it’s about the connection we all share and the freedom we feel out here on the road. This camp is a reminder that we can push beyond our limits and find joy in the journey, no matter what challenges we face.”

As the sun dipped below the horizon on the final day, the athletes gathered to reflect on their journey. The sense of accomplishment was tangible, not just in the miles covered, but in the personal growth experienced by each participant. The Colorado High Fives Dirt Camp is more than an event; it’s a testament to the power of adaptive sports and the unwavering spirit of the High Fives community.

For these athletes, the road doesn’t end here. The lessons learned and the bonds formed will carry them forward, fueling their next adventure. The High Fives Foundation is proud to support such an inspiring group of individuals and looks forward to many more years of dirt, drive, and determination. View photos by Charles Engelbert, HERE.
