#HighFivesAthlete Kevin Cheung went skiing again at Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows!
Kevin shares his experience below |
“Status update alert- Well yesterday was a good day. It’s been ~21 months since my fall at Squaw that turned my life upside down. And these past 21 months I’ve given substantial time and effort to regain what I had lost with its ups and downs- some very great days and some not so great days. But today I felt confident enough to get back out there and shred the gnar. And it turned out amazingly well! I started out relearning some of the basics on the magic carpet and eventually progressed back up to the lift/run where I got injured, on Gold Coast. It’s crazy to think I used to ski much better without thinking about all the movements I have to make to ski, like that last video from about a month prior to my fall. But I was able to ski away this time with no injuries! 😅
People always express their concern for me when they hear that I want to try to ski again, whether or not it’s a good idea, and that’s very understandable. But I know my body and what it’s capable of and I’m being risk averse. You don’t just randomly decide to go back to skiing after such an injury. You work up to it, you start relearning how to use your body and make things move again- how to walk, how to sit, even how to feed yourself again. I took and continue to take every day one step at a time. And yesterday’s step was to go ski again.
While March 7, 2015 was a significant day in my life, December 22, 2016 was also a significant day- it was the day I returned to and tried skiing again. It was a day filled with successes! Although I skied again today, it’s also important to note that it isn’t the consummation of my recovery. There’s so much more to achieve. It’s merely the culmination of all of the progress I’ve made for the past 21 months and continue to make. I definitely didn’t ski as well as I used to, but that’s okay. We’re looking for progress, not perfection.
I want to say thank you to everyone for the support and thank you to the amazing people I’ve met along the way that’ve helped me directly and indirectly -a special thanks to Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows for setting me up with Achieve Tahoe to make my day go as smoothly as possible! Another special thanks to everyone at Craig Hospital and High Fives Foundation for all of the rehab sessions that have been instrumental in getting me to where I am today!”
