During a nighttime training mission while carrying a 110# rucksack and an additional 50 pound log on top of his rucksack, Gegrig fell down a small hill and the log hit him right in the back of the head. He continued and kept stumbling. Shortly after, he lost consciousness and had what appeared to be a seizure, according to a teammate who witnessed it. He was seen at the hospital the following day and returned to training. A few days later, he was putting a machine gun away in a steel bins when the steel lid slammed shut on his head in the same spot the log hit him. He was taken directly to the hospital and the following day was medically removed from the Special Forces Qualification Course.
