Eighty Truckee-Tahoe locals participated in the tournament presented by GoPro & Squaw Valley
The High Fives Foundation hosted its 6th Annual Bocce Tournament at the Truckee River Winery on Sunday Sept.14. Approximately $10,000 was raised, an increase of $2,500 from the 2013 event, to support the recovery and rehabilitation efforts of traumatically injured winter action sports athletes. To date, High Fives has provided grant funding to 61 injured athletes in 18 states.
September marks the largest grant cycle in the organizations history, so those numbers are sure to increase.
“I’ve played in every High Fives Bocce Tournament to date and I’ve been so close to victory,” said Tahoe City’s own Nick Baron. “It is hands down my favorite event of the summer. It’s a fun competition that raises money and awareness for a foundation that does exceptional, life-changing work. As long as High Fives keeps hosting it, I’ll be there trying to win!”
The double-elimination, round robin tournament welcomed forty teams of two eager to test their skills on the bocce court. Participants had a chance to win great prizes from a variety of sponsors. Additionally, participants and spectators enjoyed music from the Silver Boombox Thief, refreshments from 7-11 Carnelian Bay, pizza from Fireside Pizza Co, delicious beer from Fifty-Fifty Brewing Co. and wine from the Truckee River Winery. Lululemon Athletica Lake Tahoe Showroom also participated by providing off-court entertainment to tournament spectators and participants.
Truckee residents Emily Boucher and Matt Paquette of Team Big Labocce won the tournament by outdueling Thomas Fralick and Jim Nemeth of Team #43 to win the grand prize of two Squaw Valley Gold Passes.
