The High Fives Foundation is awarding the 33-year-old David Hewel a board-approved Empowerment Grant towards healing services that will help him walk again.

In June 2014, Hewel suffered a T-12 burst fracture in a speed flying crash at Heavenly Resort. He has worked with specialists extensively on leg, back and core sensation and strength to regain function.

“My goal is to be able to walk into my place of work on my own two feet,” said Hewel. “And without the High Fives Foundation, people in my shoes would have very few resources for assistance to getting their lives back on track and pursuing their dreams.”

The Empowerment Grant Hewel received in June will provide him personal strength training and massage therapy at the CR Johnson Healing Center in Truckee, California.

“David has been working on his recovery here at the Healing Center since his injury in 2014,” said Roy Tuscany, Executive Director at the High Fives Foundation. “We’ve seen him make considerable improvements and he always arrives to the gym with a positive attitude and a huge smile.

In the month of June alone, the High Fives Foundation granted $18,900 to 6 High Fives Athletes.
