The High Fives Foundation’s Return to Dirt program continues to create meaningful opportunities for athletes to reconnect with the outdoors, build community, and experience adventure. On May 24, athlete Kristen Johnson embarked on a memorable day trip through Western Colorado alongside her sister and her two teenage sons, who were visiting Colorado for the very first time from Maine.
Adding to the significance of the trip, Kristen recently became involved with Bridging Bionics’ Bridging Lives Program, an innovative initiative that pairs adaptive athletes with personalized rehabilitation and support opportunities. The program is designed to connect athletes with resources and experiences that help them continue pursuing an active lifestyle.
One of the highlights of the day was making the drive to a scenic overlook above the Grand Valley. From the top, the group took in sweeping views of Grand Junction, Fruita, the Grand Mesa, and the stunning landscape of Colorado National Monument. The panoramic vista offered a perfect opportunity to appreciate the beauty of Colorado while sharing the experience with family.
For Kristen’s sons, it was their first chance to witness the dramatic terrain and wide-open spaces that make Western Colorado so unique. The day provided an opportunity to create lasting memories, strengthen family connections, and celebrate the freedom that outdoor recreation can provide.
Through programs like Return to Dirt, High Fives Foundation remains committed to helping athletes access adaptive outdoor experiences that foster confidence, independence, and adventure—one mile at a time.
Adventure. Family. Connection. That’s what Return to Dirt is all about.
