(Truckee, Calif., September 15, 2016) – California Non Profit the High Fives Foundation is continuing its support of Haiku resident, Bond Camp, through an Empowerment Grant that will send him to world renown Maui healer, Alejandra Monslave at Body Wellness Hawaii.

In 2015, Camp, 31, was backcountry skiing in Breckenridge, Colorado near where he lived at the time. It was his best day of the year, he said. But he caught an edit causing him to spin and slam onto his back. The impact led to T2/3 fractures and paralysis from the chest down. The crash also led to a broken left scapula, three broken ribs, and a punctured left lung.

Having spent a lot of time in Hawaii prior to his injury, he moved back to Maui with his girlfriend. Specifically with the intention to work with Alejandra Monslave and her team at Body Wellness Hawaii.
“My short term goals are to regain any time of volitional control over some of the muscles in my body,” said Camp. “Ive been swimming laps at least four times a week and concentrating on my diet, but working with Body Wellness Hawaii makes a huge difference.”
Camp says the High Fives Foundation has shown him how to turn tragedy into beauty.
“Bond Camp is an incredible human being with a great attitude and demeanor,” said Roy Tuscany, High Fives Foundation Executive Director. “He’s the kind of person you just want to hang around. We’re so happy to be part of his recovery.”
In May of 2016, other athletes of the High Fives Foundation traveled to Maui for a 10-day adaptive surf camp. Bond Camp joined, sharing his passion of surfing and his local’s knowledge. He surfs on a specialized board that allows him to stay in the laying down prone position throughout the whole wave. Watch the short documentary, below.
