ARCADE BELT PROGRAM | Tommy Michaels

Arcade Belt Program

Congrats to #highfivesathlete Tommy Michaels on completing his second Arcade belt goal!

Goal #2: Stand up on a snowboard again.

Tommy Michaels was hurt during a mountain biking accident in August 2017. The incident required his C6 vertebrae to be replaced, along with a fusion of his C5-C7 vertebrae. He hasn’t let his injury slow him down though. Great conditions over the past winter allowed Tommy to hit the slopes with confidence, and as seen in the video below, he really is ripping it up! Snowboarding has been a passion of Tommy’s for a while now, but while attending a High Fives Ski camp in Winter Park, CO, he discovered skiing and quickly fell in love.

All in all-pretty excited that I can stand upright on anything on the snow again!

Tommy on returning to the snow this past winter

Tommy has already sold his snowboarding gear for now and has invested in a skiing set up. As time passes he may come back to the board, but as of now having more than one plank under his feet is where the fun is! High Fives is proud to support athletes like Tommy, no matter how they choose to get down the mountain.

See what else went down at the Winter Park Adaptive Ski Camp, put on by the High Fives Foundation in January, 2019!

The Arcade Belt Program was put in place to provide our athletes with a system for setting goals. Similar to a karate belt system, athletes move through the ranks when they complete goals they set for themselves and receive a belt with stars corresponding to the goal number they accomplish.
