HIGH FIVES ATHLETE RECEIVES EMPOWERMENT GRANT | Alex Goldmeier

Meet #HighFivesAthlete Alex Goldmeier (Athlete #202) from Plainview, NY

In June 2018, the High Fives Foundation disbursed $74,539.86 to 24 Athlete’s across North America.
Alex received a grant from the High Fives Foundation for $2,200 to be used toward massage, a gym membership and FES bike training; all items that are not covered by his insurance.

On February 2018, Alex Goldmeier was on a fun ski day with friends when things went incredibly wrong. On one of the groups last runs, Alex was found unconscious on the side of the New York ski mountain. He crashed and hit multiple trees. When patrol found him, he was life-flighted to Albany Medical Center where his family was notified he had sustained injuries to his thoracic spine, heart vessel, kidney, right clavicle, right wrist, ribs, right lung and facial fractures along with suffering a traumatic brain injury.
Immediately following his admittance into the medical center, Alex underwent two spinal invasive emergency surgeries. He had a stent put in his heart and a lumbar stabilization for a T-4/5 vertebrae fractures.
Alex remained in the ICU at Albany Medical Center for two weeks. Alex is currently a complete paraplegic, but plans to pour everything he has into his recovery.

This grant will allow me to gain back my strength and build the muscle I lost from my injury. It will also allow me to return to the extremely active lifestyle I had before - skiing, biking, golfing, playing tennis, weightlifting , etc.

#HighFivesAthlete Alex

Alex wants to become as strong and independent as possible so that he can participate in the outdoor sports that he loves. He hopes, and prays, to walk again some day. He aspires to become a clinical psychologist and is in the process of interviewing for enrollment in a Psychology Doctoral program.

The High Fives Foundation supports injured outdoor action sports Athletes through grant funding to be used towards reaching their recovery goals. Since the Foundation’s January 2009 inception, the Empowerment Program Service has assisted 212 Athletes from 31 states in nine respective funding categories: Living expenses, insurance, travel, health, healing network, adaptive equipment, winter equipment, programs and “stoke” (positive energy, outlook and attitude).
