Meet #HighFivesAthlete George Gonzalez (Athlete #159) from Palm City, FL
In June 2018, the High Fives Foundation disbursed $74,539.86 to 24 Athlete’s across North America.
George received a grant for the High Fives Foundation for $6,300 to be used toward PT and acupuncture in his hometown in Florida.
George was snowboarding with his step-father in Colorado when he suffered his accident. While heading down a blue run, he came to a section where a bunch of small kids came out of the trees and surprised him. Not wanting to run into them, George tried to check up using his heel edge, but when he did, he caught his toe edge and flipped over landing on his head. The impact led to a C6/7 burst fracture, causing paralysis from the neck down.
A very goal oriented high school student, George ultimately wants to become more independent, and through hard work at Craig Hospital, he is getting closer each day. Eventually he wants to get back out on the mountain in whatever capacity his recovery will allow him.
George’s second goal in the High Fives X Arcade Goal Belt Program was to get back into the ocean and surf again. Later this month, Gerorge and his family will travel to Santa Cruz, CA to participate in a High Fives hosted surf camp.
The High Fives Foundation supports injured outdoor action sports Athletes through grant funding to be used towards reaching their recovery goals. Since the Foundation’s January 2009 inception, the Empowerment Program Service has assisted 212 Athletes from 31 states in nine respective funding categories: Living expenses, insurance, travel, health, healing network, adaptive equipment, winter equipment, programs and “stoke” (positive energy, outlook and attitude).
