Meet #HighFivesAthlete Mike Greenlee (Athlete #169) from Reno, NV
In June 2018, the High Fives Foundation disbursed $74,539.86 to 24 Athlete’s across North America.
Mike is an employee of Bobo’s Ski Board and Patio in Reno, and they have been a huge support system for him following his injury. Bobo’s, Dolan Auto and the High Fives Foundation helped support Mike and his wife with his adaptive home remodel following his injury, and a June grant for $2,362.99 will get Mike driving again.
While riding the Siberia chair lift at Squaw Valley, Mike lost consciousness and fell 40 feet to the snow. He sustained a burst fracture of T9, which caused a complete spinal cord injury. Shortly after being care-flighted to Renown, Mike underwent 6 hours of surgery – laminectomies of T8 and T9 and spinal fusion from T5 to T12.
Having an SCI is expensive, and this grant will help me pay for medical equipment and recreational equipment alike. Recreational equipment will get me back outdoors, doing adapted versions of what I loved to do.
Mike’s recovery goals are total independence, improved confidence and self-esteem, advanced wheelchair skills and eventually sit-skiing…which the High Fives Foundation will assist with, when he is medically cleared.
The High Fives Foundation supports injured outdoor action sports Athletes through grant funding to be used towards reaching their recovery goals. Since the Foundation’s January 2009 inception, the Empowerment Program Service has assisted 212 Athletes from 31 states in nine respective funding categories: Living expenses, insurance, travel, health, healing network, adaptive equipment, winter equipment, programs and “stoke” (positive energy, outlook and attitude).
