Meet #HighFivesAthlete Brett Kennedy (Athlete #194) from Walnut, CA
In June 2018, the High Fives Foundation disbursed $74,539.86 to 24 Athlete’s across North America.
Brett has made a tremendous recovery, and applied and received a grant for a $275 gym membership. The membership will help him get back to the things that he loves, and High Fives is ready to support Brett in any fashion that helps.
Brett was snowboarding when he went off a jump wrong doing a backside 180. He had executed the trick multiple times, but this one ended with him landing on his lower back on the landing. The impact resulted in a burst fracture of his L3 vertebrae, causing temporary paralysis from the waist down.
Brett’s recovery goals include getting back to his daily routines of working, fly fishing, hiking, water skiing and snowboarding. Although he has experienced a life-altering injury, he wants to one day get back to the way he felt pre-injury.
The High Fives Foundation supports injured outdoor action sports Athletes through grant funding to be used towards reaching their recovery goals. Since the Foundation’s January 2009 inception, the Empowerment Program Service has assisted 212 Athletes from 31 states in nine respective funding categories: Living expenses, insurance, travel, health, healing network, adaptive equipment, winter equipment, programs and “stoke” (positive energy, outlook and attitude).
