Meet #HighFivesAthlete Brooke Nelson (Athlete #168) from Salt Lake City, UT
In June 2018, the High Fives Foundation disbursed $74,539.86 to 24 Athlete’s across North America.
Brooke received a grant for $3,815 to continue training at Neuroworx – A specialized facility in Salt Lake City. The grant also covers acupuncture and dry needling.
Brooke was injured while mountain biking with her family at a bike park in Boise, Idaho. She decided to scout out a trail for her kids & came upon what she thought was a typical roller, but unfortunately it turned out to be an unmarked gap jump. Brooke didn’t have the speed to clear the jump, nor time to react and was on the ground. She instantly realized that she had broken her back.
The fall resulted in a severe fracture at T6 and she is currently paralyzed from the chest down. She is currently training very hard to one day get back on her bike, and back to the outdoors with her family.
Neuroworx is the only Salt Lake City PT clinic that specializes in spinal cord injuries and therefore has equipment that no other PT clinic in the area has. They also have first hand knowledge of spinal cord injuries.
Brooke is attending the High Fives Foundation surf camp in Santa Cruz and is looking forward to getting back to outdoor recreation.
The High Fives Foundation supports injured outdoor action sports Athletes through grant funding to be used towards reaching their recovery goals. Since the Foundation’s January 2009 inception, the Empowerment Program Service has assisted 212 Athletes from 31 states in nine respective funding categories: Living expenses, insurance, travel, health, healing network, adaptive equipment, winter equipment, programs and “stoke” (positive energy, outlook and attitude).
